Have you got a pick of it ? Some can be tested accurately, some all you can do is a continuity test. Ebay, Lots of Salvage yards on web,VSCA,NH vintage classifieds,If you cant find one a salvage is near me I would check for you, need #s,good luck

no pics yet, i'm new to this site. i'll try and get some pics up soon. but my neighbor is a snowmobile junkie and he can get me parts i just need to know whats up with it. i looked at all the wires, and they are fine. i put in a new tail light (cuz they are way cheaper than a headlight), and it burt out when i gave it gas. so i'm guessin its the voltage regulator. and that is the square box that is wired to the head and tail lights, it says 12 V on it. does that sound correct?

Yes, that sounds correct....should most likely be a two wire deal....

The voltage reg. on a 79 exciter (at least on mine) is located under the left side footrest down in behind the secondary and it is a 1 wire regulator. You can buy 1 new for around $25 from dennis kirk.
