As many of you know, I just got a 2001 MXZ 600. I'm not a bad mechanic, but I know little about the newer sleds. I have it running fine. Starts 2nd or 3rd pull after sitting overnight. During the day, it will start first pull (unless I forget to pull up the kill switch).
While driving it this past weekend there is a noise. Hard to describe but a kind of pulsating mechanical noise that may be normal, perhaps coming from the clutch. It's not loud, but I notice all those little noises with machines. Also while riding at about 30 to 40 mph it seems to catch and grab slightly. It could be the track engaging and disengaging on loose snow, but I'm not certain. If I push on the throttle hard, it takes off well...more than I need it too so I'm happy with the power. It's just this feeling of grab and release and the noise which concerns me.
It has 144 studs in the track and that could be what's causing the catch and grab.
Just wondering if it is something I should worry about now or just ride and enjoy.

Daggerdoggie I bet that sled was not making pulsating mechanical noises and doing the catch and grab when it was new.....Definitely check out the chaincase backlash and condition of all of the drive bearings. Jack up or suspend the sled and loosen the track all the way make sure the driveshaft is tight (no sideplay) and rotates smoothly. Grab the driven clutch make sure the shaft will not wiggle. Take the belt and chain off and check the jackshaft for any side play or roughness. Check the condition of the chain and gears. Make sure no window clips in the track are catching on the suspension. Hyfax excessively worn to the point of metal-metal contact? Pull the skid and check the rear axle wheel bearings - wheels should rotate smooth with no roughness or sideplay. Same for the idler wheels. Do the easy stuff first. I bunch of rusty looking dust in the vicinity of any bearing is a clue that it may be wiped. My 2 cents for what it's worth. These are all things that should be checked on an 8 yr old sled making noises or not.

use emery cloth/scotch brite on your clutch faces and a little on the sides of your belt.
Could be slight slipping from no bite causing rapid clutch shift.

Thanks for the thoughts. I will check all those things as soon as I get a chance.
