I'm not overly confident, but I do believe that there is either a voltage regulator or the stator itself is a voltage regulator...but first I would make sure to check all the wiring to make sure its not touching anything causing a cross or ground somewhere...I know last season my light, handwarmers and whatnot wouldn't work unless the switch was on high beam and it was still weak so when I had the motor out fixing a motor mount I saw that the wires were compressed on each other crossing the signal....fixed the wires it fixed the problem...I know I didn't really say too much but its just an idea or two before you really get into something expensive. Hope that helps.

Darrick, First off...Nice sled. I have a 79 myself and I really had a great time riding this sled. We are in the process of fixing her back up. Anyway, as Mike said in the previous message, Check out all your wires. Make sure they aren't frayed. Double check the wire under the seat that feeds the tailight. Check all grounds. If they are all good, replace the voltage regulator. You could probably find one cheap on EBAY. The part number you are looking for is: 898-81910-12-00 That is straight from Yamaha for a 79. It is a single wire regulator. Some are definitely interchangeable. Hope this helps. I see that you are new to the website. Are you a member of a local club and where do you ride? Bob

Rectifirer, did tail light burn as well, even new bulbs may have vacume leak to cause bright burnout. Have a multi meter? only 12v should show on output, test at bulb plug....looks like you will have time with the meltdown...later
