I just put one together a few weeks ago and although its abit tough its definetly do-able, but you may want to untie the pull handle and take the entire recoil off the sled. it's pretty easy to work on and just as easy to put back on the sled once your finished.
first you want to make sure you have all you adjustment pieces back together (i.e your locking clips that when you give it a tug they expand and grab the recoil housing)
when you get that back together you can work on the spring, first you want to hook up the outer hook of the spring on the hosuing. I found that it was easier to just try and wind the spring back in with one hand while making sure it won't spring back out of the hosuing with the other. once you hit the break point the rest of the spring should just slide in easier.
next you just want to check the inner mounting hook of the spring, the part that actually hooks up to the recoil mechanism. just make sure that its got enough of a bend in it that when you place the recoil back down onto the housing you can slowly spin it as to make that hook grab its place.
when that happens you just want to make sure it has enough tension for your likeing and then you can put the lockin nuts back on and should be able to then put it back on the engine.
Hopefully this helps you out alittle or atleast points you in the right direction!!!

Hey Matt I'm also from down in Waverly, got my ZRT this past summer and have only ridden it a few times due to the lack of snow. However, I did get the chance to take it up on the north side of Utica and ride in a few feet of fresh powder up there and I can tell you...d**n!!! She'll haul the Mail!!! I'm hopefully gettin it back today I have had it in the shop having the chaincase gone through...and with this snow fall hopefully on the way I should have it back tonight (fingers crossed)...so think SNOW and everybody better get out there and RIDE!!!

^I hope you had a chance to see my how to on recoils. Chaincase gone through? What was the matter with it? You can do that stuff yourself if you just get online and ask a few questions

I had the chain case gone through since the guy who had the sled before me must have had the chain tension set way to tight and the chain literally exploded in the case causing just about all of the gears to get pretty chewed up. I have reverse on the sled as well and when I was looking at the case to fix it myself it just looked like a pain in the ass with the drop case assembly there so I just sucked it up and dished out a few bucks to have it professionally done...However, a week after I got the d**n thing back the speedo end of the drive shaft blew out the bearing and ripped out of the tunnel causing it to pretty much do the same thing....So the new parts are in today to rebuild it so I'll be working on that for the next couple days so I'll let you know how it goes. Gotta love bad luck!!!
