Left about 10:30 today from near Richford. Lots of snow on the trail into Berkshire, but no recent groomer evidence. The trail was in good shape, even in the woods. The steep hill just northwest of Berkshire is pretty bare and icy at the top. Lou's cabin is open until 8 tonight, 9 to 5 tomorrow.
The WP club has been grooming like mad men. Looks like they made several passes through the wet, bare spots. Still, the woods on either end of Turkey Hiil State Forest are in rough shape - wet, bare in places. But they have made a great effort to get things in shape - pulling in as much snow as they could from the sides, to fill in the holes. Most of the fields are OK - still some thin spots and isolated icy areas.
There seemed to be quite a bit less snow east of Turkey Hill. The river flat between Lisle and WP was in decent shape - but there did not seem to be much snow there to begin with.
All in all a good ride - first of the year. If it warms up, or the sun comes out at all, those thin spots will be bare real soon. Thanks to the WP guys for their efforts! We ran into a couple of them on foot clearing spruce limbs near Abbott Rd - the groomer cab was getting banged up they said.
Not many sleds out today. We passed maybe a dozen in total both ways.
